According to legends based on Tibetan and Buddhist culture, the Hemis Festival dates back to the eighth century. It is claimed that Lord Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rimpoche, is the local saviour who drove out demons and evil spirits.

According to legend, the spiritual guide brought Tantric Buddhism to the Himalayan Kingdom. Buddhism and Tibetan culture were combined to create a new way of life that was based on prayer, a strict lifestyle, and a greater purpose.
